EU needs to reflect ‘bravery’ of Greek referendum – Carthy

The Greek government has limited time left
to provide acceptable proposals to its EU counterparts to prevent a banking
collapse and an exit from the Eurozone. The Greek government caused consternation
in Brussels yesterday when it failed to present new bailout proposals. Well
this morning the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will address the European
Parliament in Strasbourg. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says EU leaders need to
respect the outcome of last weekend’s referendum in Greece and show leniency
towards the Greeks.

Tsipras to address European Parliament

The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras
will address the European Parliament this morning. It’s expected Mr Tsipras
will outline the conclusions of his summit meeting with EU leaders in Brussels
yesterday. Greece has been given forty eight hours to strike a new bailout deal
with its Eurozone creditors or face a banking collapse. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt
Carthy says EU leaders need to stop imposing austerity measures on the Greeks.

Europe needs to be more forgiving to Greeks – Ni Riada

Eurozone finance ministers will make
another attempt this evening to broker an agreement on Greece. Hopes are fading
that a solution will be found quickly with some reports from Brussels saying
the Greek government hasn’t presented anything new to their EU counterparts.
However, the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says last weekend’s referendum result
needs to be recognised by the EU and that they need to be more forgiving towards
Greece.
