European Parliament votes for better gender equality strategies

The European Parliament is calling for better
strategies to tackle gender inequalities in the European Union. MEPs today
voted for practical actions and more effective monitoring to make real
headway against discrimination in the labour market, education and
decision-making.  The Fine Gael MEP
Deirdre Clune says the EU Commission needs to introduce laws to ensure greater
pay equality between men and women across the EU.

The European Union is looking for a new strategy to
promote equality between men and women beyond 2015. The gender gap in equality was
debated in the European Parliament last night. According to a European
Parliament report, progress on gender equality in the EU is too slow. MEPs say
much more needs to be done to bridge the gender equality gap. The Fine Gael MEP,
Deidre Clune says the EU needs to bring in laws that will force employers to
provide equal pay for the same work regardless of the sex of the employee.
