Strong border controls important – McGuinness

EU leaders want to speed up
the establishment of an EU border and coast control force to tackle the flow of
migrants and improve security measures. Last night at an EU summit in Brussels,
they urged each other to implement measures to stem the migration flow across
the Mediterranean. Well details of the proposed new EU border force were outlined during the week in the European Parliament. The  Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says recent events
in Europe highlight the need to improve the border controls.

Internet giants face big fines if data protection rules breached

Social media giants like Facebook and Instagram face big fines if they break new draft EU data protection rules. The new
pan-European data protection bill was debated in the European Parliament this
week. The draft laws are designed to give citizens control over their private
data, while also creating clarity and legal certainty for businesses to spur
competition in the digital market. Internet companies like Facebook, Snapchat
and Instagram could face huge fines if they don’t adhere to the data protection
laws once they come into force. In addition, companies will also have to
appoint a data protection officer if they process sensitive data on a large
scale or collect information on many consumers. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune
now explains.

IFA needs to rebuild and reform to lobby at EU level

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says
it’s essential the IFA rebuilds its credibility to be a strong lobby
organisation for farmers at an EU level. The Midlands North-West MEP says she’s
shocked at the damning revelations from the Con Lucey report into IFA
remunerations for senior officials. But she is warning that farmers need a strong
voice in Brussels to continue to fight for their rights.
