Time for EU Commission to act in farmers’ interests – Carthy

The European Commission must immediately
bring forward laws to ensure farmers are treated equally in the food supply
chain. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy who is calling for EU legislation
to ensure farmers receive fair treatment and a proper income. 600 MEPs voted
today for a resolution urging the Commission to bring forward rules to end
practices that are unfair to farmers, such as delayed payments, market access
restrictions and being forced to sell below production cost. However Mr Carthy
is concerned that the Commission will not stand firm against the interests of
retailers and processors.
