Clune calls on Government to ratify convention on violence against women

A Fine Gael MEP is calling on the government to ratify a major international convention that should provide better protection for women who are victims of violence including domestic violence. Deirdre Clune this week in the European Parliament highlighted the plight of female victims of violence. She says Ireland needs to ratify the Istanbul Convention which was established in 2011 and which is designed to provide a series of measures to combat violence against women.

Censure against Juncker a waste of time – Clune

This morning’s attempt to secure a vote of no confidence in the EU Commission President was a waste of time. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune. The European Parliament rejected a motion of censure against the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and his team. 76 MEPs put forward the motion because of the allegations that emerged from the so-called Lux-leaks. In the end, 461 MEPs voted against the motion with 101 in favour and 88 abstentions. Here’s Deirdre Clune.

MEPs reject vote of no confidence in Juncker

The European Parliament today rejected a motion of censure against the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and his team. 76 MEPs put forward the motion of no confidence against Mr Juncker because of the allegations that emerged from the Lux-leaks. They were to do with recent media investigations into alleged secret tax deals between Luxembourg and international corporations. Mr Juncker was Luxembourg’s Prime Minister during the years these alleged deals were done.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says he has little confidence in Mr Juncker.
