European Parliament to vote on widely used weed killer – McGuinness

The European Parliament is voting today on
whether or not to renew the authorisation of a widely used weed killer. The
Parliament’s Environment Committee is urging MEPs not to renew the licence for
another 15 years, for glyphosate which is used in weed killers such as Roundup.
They’re claiming serious concerns remain about the carcinogenicity and hormone
disruptive properties of glyphosate. And they want the EU Commission to carry
out
an independent review and disclose all the
scientific evidence that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) used to
assess glyphosate. The
Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness
says she’s been contacted by a lot of people on this.

Trust between FG & FF will have to be built – Hayes

The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says it would
be a disaster for the country if we had to have another election. Mr Hayes, who
was speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, says trust will have
to be built between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail if they manage to broker an
agreement leading to the formation of a minority government backed by the other
party.
