Withdrawal of all pesticides unknown impact – McGuinness

A withdrawal of all plant protection products from the market would have unknown consequences. That’s the warning from the Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness.

The European Parliament this week voted for plans to boost trust in the EU approval procedure of pesticides by making it more accountable and transparent.

The majority of MEPs approved a report that was put forward by a special European Parliament committee that was set up last February to investigate the authorisation procedure for pesticides. It was established after the controversial 5-year renewal of glyphosate.

Some MEPs want to ban all pesticides while others say they’re needed to protect crops. Here’s Mairead McGuinness.

MEP slams RTE Late Late show for Nigel Farage airtime

RTE has been slammed by an Irish MEP for the airtime it’s given to the former Ukip leader Nigel Farage.

The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says the State broadcaster should not have invited Mr Farage as a guest onto last year’s Late Late show in London which was supposed to celebrate the Irish in Britain.

During the week Mr Farage spoke in the European Parliament about Brexit. He warned MEPs that if Britain held a second referendum on it they would win by a bigger majority.

Lynn Boylan says the Irish media are giving the Eurosceptic too much publicity.

Emergency travel documents for travellers who lose passports – Clune

The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says there will be better help for Irish people who lose their passports when travelling outside the EU.

The European Parliament this week voted on rules to improve emergency help for travellers who’ve lost their passports and who may find themselves in a place that doesn’t have any embassy from their own country.

They will now be able to get temporary travel documents at another Member State consulate.
