The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes is demanding that
the Panamanian government appear before MEPs to answer questions in relation to
the recent Panama Papers scandal. The leaked
documents showed how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth.
The
files were leaked from one of the world’s most secretive companies, a
Panamanian law firm called Mossack Fonseca. The European
Parliament this week established an inquiry committee to investigate
revelations of alleged tax avoidance schemes in Panama. Mr Hayes who will sit
on the committee, wants representatives from Mossack Fonseca and the Panamanian
