The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan talks to Owen Stafford about why the European Parliament is demanding the European Commission publish important scientific information on endocrine disruptors. She was speaking prior to a vote in theEuropean Parliament today (Wednesday) which adopted a resolution by 593 votesto 57 with 19 abstentions, calling for the European Commission to presentdelayed scientific criteria to tackle exposure to endocrine disruptors.  The piece begins with Boylan’s response to aquestion about why the European Commission has delayed publishing much-neededinformation (commonly called scientific criteria) in order to act on regulatingendocrine disruptors.

MEP demands Health Minister action on toxic chemicals – Boylan

The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan is calling on
the Health Minister Simon Harris to push the European Commission to regulate
harmful chemicals used in everyday products. Her calls follow a vote in the
European Parliament today condemning delays by the European Commission in
publishing scientific information needed to address exposure to hormone
disrupting chemicals known as endocrine-disruptors.  Endocrine disruptors
are
chemicals found in everyday products, such as cosmetics and plastics. There are
concerns that these chemicals interact with hormonal systems that are damaging
to people’s health and to the environment.  Lynn Boylan says the Government needs to put
pressure on the Commission to regulate these toxic chemicals.

The European Parliament today condemned
delays by the European Commission in publishing scientific information needed
to identify and address exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals. MEPs say the Commission
has persistently failed to act on providing much-needed information on endocrine-disrupting
chemicals.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals found
in everyday products, such as cosmetics and plastics. There are concerns that these chemicals interact with hormonal systems that are damaging to people’s
health and to the environment.
The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says the European Commission needs to act on regulating these so-called “gender bender” chemicals.
